While no one can guarantee the safety of any destination, we thought it would be prudent to research Caribbean destinations that the U.S. Department of State considers to be of the least concern.
You can find detailed reports at the Travel.state.gov website. Of the available destinations in the Caribbean (or nearby), there clearly was one standout!
Cayman Islands – The International travel report on Safety & Security states the following. “The Cayman Islands are a safe place with little criminal activity affecting tourists.” This is a rare statement for the U.S. Department of State to make about any international destination.
Other destinations that may be of interest to those considering the safety of a destination:
Bermuda –“By comparison to the United States, Bermuda has a low to moderate crime rate.” An interesting expression by the U.S. Department of State. Since most of us live in the USA, it would seem that the implied message is that it’s pretty safe to travel to Bermuda.
Anguilla – “Anguilla’s crime rate is relatively low.” That sounds pretty good! But, they do qualify that crimes do occur.
Turks & Caicos Islands – “Crime in TCIS is low but increasing.”
“Travelers should be aware of their surroundings and take precautions to secure personal belongings. Exercise caution when visiting isolated areas after dark on the Islands. Be careful using ATMs in the evening hours.”
Travel.state.gov rarely points out that crime levels are low. From reading each destination safety statement, it is clear that crime occurs pretty much everywhere. In the USA, in the Caribbean, and around the globe.
Our staff has traveled the world and I’ve personally traveled to the Caribbean and Mexico over 200 times. While there are some destinations that the Department of State considers to be lower risk, I’ve traveled without incident to many, many of the other islands and have always mingled with the locals.
Keep your guard up, take precautions when venturing into unknown areas, and listen to information from your resort or cruise line and international travel can still be a safe and rewarding experience!
