Generation X.  A generation defined by the Harvard Center as having been born between 1965 and 1984. I’m a Gen X’er! Having been born in the later 60’s, I’m one of the older members of this group and proud to say that we have all endured quite a few changes in our time on earth and performed quite admirably. We’re a link to the time before advanced technology and before the instant society that we now live in. Yet, we also adapted to newly introduced technology more rapidly than the Baby Boomers that came before us. And many of our parents still look to us to provide “tech support”.

This gives us a unique place in the world and an opportunity to bridge the gap between what we have and what we had.

So now what do we do in our 40’s, 50’s and beyond? Travel. I can think of no better way to make sense of an evolving world than to travel the different regions of the planet and experience new cultures and see destinations of varying advancement.

As many of us begin to think about retirement, opt for retirement and take on a “retirement” job to stay active, travel becomes more and more of a focus. Many of you have had the opportunity to travel but many are just finding the time to make travel a priority. Several of my friends are now empty nesters and are looking for ways to enjoy the world of travel.

What are some top destinations for over 40? for over 50?

The Caribbean is always a top choice because of the close proximity of the islands to the majority of the USA population.

Top Caribbean Islands For Generation X:

      1. Turks and Caicos – This chain of islands just below the Bahamas and Florida ranks as one of the best beach destinations in the world. Just a short flight from Miami, Providenciales (airport code PVR)  is home to a vast offering of luxury resorts exuding a laid back island vibe.  You won’t find spring breakers here. They simply can’t afford it! The exclusivity and endless stretches of perfect white sand beaches is the perfect back drop to pristine aqua waters unrivaled in the Caribbean. It’s an idyllic getaway for people over 40. Most activities are beach and ocean centric but there is enough nightlife to entertain.
      2. St Maarten/St Martin – A perennial favorite of American retirees, this Dutch/French archipelago is the ultimate Southern Caribbean escape. With accommodations ranging from all inclusive resorts to private villas, St Maarten/St Martin, offers picturesque beach settings in the intimate Caribbean. Just a short boat ride from Anguilla, this island is a favorite cruise stopover but really shines as a base for exploring the less explored.  And the bonus? It’s definitely not spring break friendly.

    3. AnguillaSpeaking of the less explored…Just ask your friends if they’ve visited Anguilla. I’ll venture to say that not many have. It’s not a place for all inclusive, rather a place to lounge at luxury resorts and opulent villas and then hang with the locals. Long a favorite of those looking for tranquility and a non-commercialized island experience, Anguilla is one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. And perfect for those in their 40s, 50s and beyond.

Now that we have three great options in the Caribbean, it’s time to head to Europe.

What are the best European destinations for Gen Xer’s?

    1. Italy- On everyone’s bucket list, Italy is the all-encompassing attraction. With delectable cuisine, historical magnificence, fashion-forward thinking and an undyingly romantic charm, Italy wows from beginning to end. From wining and dining in Tuscany to exploring the ancient Roman civilization in Rome to perusing world-class art galleries of Florence and experiencing the allure of the canals of Venice, Italy is a captivating choice for Gen X’ers.

2. Greece – A close second to Italy, Greece is one of the most talked about destinations that just seems to be the one that got away. The image of Santorini is undeniably a major draw to this Mediterranean gem.  Greece is not all about the islands. It’s much more. There is so much history, art, and culture available that an island/city combination is the best way to see the country.  Greece is hard to plan on your own. Maybe that’s why travel agents excel at Greece. When you are ready, let us know your travel dates and we will take care of the details.

3. Ireland – Oh Ireland! From Dublin to Giant’s Causeway to the Cliffs of Moher, to the Ring of Kerry, to Kilkenny and Belfast and Cork, you’ll find captivating scenery, spectacular historic castles, welcoming pubs and colorful locals. Fully escorted tours of Ireland travel by luxury motor coach on several itineraries around the country and cater to a 40+ crowd.
